A Date with Irene

by YourOtherLeft News

Along the East Coast, people are preparing to meet Hurricane Irene.

Forecasters have been talking about the storm for days and nobody is taking chances as it’s expected to hit the U.S. this weekend.

States of emergency have been declared up and down the coast. In some areas, residents have been ordered to evacuate their homes.

Irene’s path of destruction so far promises to be long and lengthy.

Usually, hurricanes that get up into the higher latitudes are fast-moving. This one isn’t — which means it will be a powerful, slow-moving storm that could be doing a lot of damage.

Hellishly Hot

by YourOtherLeft News

Thanks to MSNBC!

Thanks to MSNBC!

No matter where you were in the U.S. this past week you probably heard the phrase “It’s hot!” more than a few times.

Throughout the last several days, a massive heat wave overtook 29 states. On Friday, the East Coast seemed to take the brunt, breaking previous temperature records.

In Central Park, the temperature reached 115 degrees once humidity was factored in. Parts of Washington, D.C. felt like 120 degrees.

All over, power grids faced increased demand as people took shelter inside and cranked their air-conditions up.

How have you been keeping cool?

Breaking Steamy Sweaty Records

by Keepingitclassy News

I think everyone can agree the weather around the US has gotten pretty funky in the past few years.

There has been record snow falls in New England, record droughts and record rains in the Rocky Mountains as well as record floods in the Mississippi.

Now the weather records are boiling over in Baltimore. Steaming hot temperatures forced the Commissioner of Health Dr. Oxiris Barbot to extend a code red heat alert through June 1, 2011. Cooling centers opened in several community action centers.

On Memorial Day Monday, 98-degree heat tied the record for the date, set in 1991. Ninety-eight is also the highest temperature on record in Baltimore for any date in May.

Baltimore wasn’t the only city affected. Heat advisories were set for Maryland and Virginia closing schools early the last two days. Even cities like D.C. and Chicago scorched over the memorial day weekend.

Police shut a beach down near Chicago after four people suffering from exhaustion were rushed to a nearby hospital.

What is with this weather? Is this the tail end of La Niña? Are we catching some early rays from the south? Check out the records that melted this week.

Film Festival: Frozen Frenzy!

by ForeverPlaid Film Festival

We at USDemocrazy are victims. Victims of the SNOWPOCALYPSE, that is.

If you live in the mid-Atlantic region, you know what we’re talking about. If you live in the northern mid-west, you’re probably thinking, “Um, OK.”

And since we are snowed in and absolutely bored out of our minds, we became unnaturally obsessed with snow stories and videos, which we’re sharing here. If you think it’s going to be boring, you’re clearly unfamiliar with how awesome blizzards are.

Snow can make people act crazy. But no one can act crazier than meteorologists, as evidenced by the video above, featuring a seemingly maniacal weatherman flipping out over the most recent mid-Atlantic blizzard. It’s awesome.

What’s also awesome is thundersnow. Haven’t heard of it? Well, the concept is simple: imagine a thunderstorm, subtract the rain, and add a whole lot of snow. And there you have it. They’re pretty rare, so meteorologists get worked up over thundersnow storms as well. For instance, Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel:

And Mr. Cantore isn’t the only one enraptured by this meteorological anomaly:
