<p>We at <a href="http://www.usdemocrazy.net" target="_blank">US Democrazy</a> love a full plate (especially on Thanksgiving) but President Obama seems to have taken (or rather been given) more than his share of problems.</p>
<p>To help you keep track, we have a maddening menu of Obama’s plate full of problems.<span id="more-2712"></span></p>
<p><strong>Soup: Afghan Plan du Jour<span style="font-weight:normal;"> </span></strong></p>
<p>Okay, so we are starting with leftovers (from President George Bush), however, Obama has added his own <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/07/03/the-afghanistan-surge/" target="_blank">seasonings</a>.</p>
<p>What’s the big picture now?  Well, <a href="http://www.whorunsgov.com/Profiles/Gen._Stanley_A._McChrystal" target="_blank">General Stanley McChrystal</a>, head honcho of US forces in Afghanistan, says we need <a href="http://www.whorunsgov.com/Profiles/Gen._Stanley_A._McChrystal" target="_blank">more</a> boots on the ground.</p>
<p>Obama has not officially <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0922/p02s01-usmi.html" target="_blank">decided</a> but he’s definitely pondering the question as he noted on ‘<a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32935603/ns/meet_the_press/page/3/" target="_blank">Meet the Press</a>,’</p>
<blockquote><p>The question that I&#8217;m asking right now is to our military, to General McChrystal, to General Petraeus, to all our national<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span>security apparatus, is— whether it&#8217;s troops who are already there, or any troop request in the future, how does this advance America&#8217;s national security interests</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Salad: Mixed Green (Initiatives)</strong></p>
<p>Climate change has been a <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/08/28/hot-enough-for-you/" target="_blank">hot</a> issue for a while now but Obama &amp; congress have served up some <a href="http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1907528,00.html" target="_blank">legislation</a>.</p>
<p>Soon, however Obama will be tackling international environmental initiatives.  World leaders are meeting for a daylong <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-GreenBusiness/idUSTRE58K2WP20090921" target="_blank">discussion</a> on climate change.  Of course the big climate meeting is December&#8217;s <a href="http://en.cop15.dk/" target="_blank">meeting</a> in Copenhagen, Denmark.</p>
<p>With a salad this mixed there is sure to be some disagreement.  Already, Obama is going to have to navigate EU <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e4328854-a6da-11de-bd14-00144feabdc0.html" target="_blank">annoyance</a> with the lack of American action.</p>
<p><strong>Hors d’oeuvre:  Financial Finger Foods</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>In case you were out the US economy has been in a rough patch lately.  How’d this happen?</p>
<p>Well, basically many banks crashed and started a disastrous game of dominoes (for a better description check out our earlier <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/in-laymens-termsthe-story-of-the-financial-worlds-collapse/" target="_blank">coverage</a>)</p>
<p>The official story now is that the economy will be all <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/08/14/on-the-road-to-recovery/" target="_blank">up</a> from here.  Of course, that doesn’t mean it has to be a <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-09/22/content_12093447.htm" target="_blank">fast</a> recovery.</p>
<p>The Feds are also going to have to figure out what to do with the toxic <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/21/federal-reserve-meeting-business-washington-housing.html" target="_blank">mortgages</a> they bought.  It&#8217;s enough to give you indigestion.</p>
<p><strong>Main Course:  Health Care Surprise</strong></p>
<p>Health care has been the main event on capital hill for quite some time now.  Initially, Obama stayed out of the kitchen but recently he’s <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/09/11/idiots-guide-to-obamas-healthcare-speech/" target="_blank">joined</a> the chefs.</p>
<p>Congress is now reaching the point of <a href="http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/politics/2009/09/21/finance-committee-prepares-to-debate-baucuss-healthcare-plan.html" target="_blank">debating</a> the recipe to solve America’s health care needs.</p>
<p>Obama however is having trouble finding consensus, even from <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27367.html" target="_blank">Democrats</a>.  Some Republicans however are showing they may be able to find at least some <a href="http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/boustany-we-agree-with-80-percent-of-obamas-plan-which-should-be-scrapped.php" target="_blank">common</a> ground.</p>
<p>Where will this lead?  Nobody knows for sure but Democracy in America, of <em>The Economist</em>, makes an interesting <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2009/09/_i_am_always_sceptical.cfm" target="_blank">point</a> that</p>
<blockquote><p>there are plenty of small steps being considered that warrant our attention and support, regardless of political affiliation. Let&#8217;s not forget this should major reform fail. They&#8217;ll still be good ideas thereafter.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Dessert:  Raging Right Raspberries</strong></p>
<p>Don’t forget dessert.  Not that you could with all of the <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/heroic-heckler-or-rude-representative/" target="_blank">shouting</a>.  Just about every choice Obama makes seems to <a href="http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/special_reports/60027112.html" target="_blank">anger</a> the right.</p>
<p>Of course, there will also be plenty of hot <a href="http://usdemocrazy.wordpress.com/2009/09/20/its-party-time/" target="_blank">tea</a> to wash the meal down.</p>
<p>Sounds good doesn&#8217;t?  Of course everyone has different tastes so if there is something you think should be on the menu feel free to comment.  Otherwise you&#8217;ll be eating what were cooking.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">RED ALERT! AMERICA HAS A NEW THREAT!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Now, don’t start panicking!! (That means you, <a href="http://www.usdemocrazy.net/" target="_blank">USDemocrazy</a> editor.)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The US Department of Homeland security has released a new report citing the increased risk of domestic <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0409/21243.html" target="_blank">terrorist</a> groups.<span> </span>Here’s the full ten-page <a href="http://images.logicsix.com/DHS_RWE.pdf" target="_blank">report</a>.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The threats are from right-wing extremist groups. With returning veterans and a weak economy, the report suggests conditions are right for new violent groups to form.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Although the DHS report cites no current violent groups, there <em>is </em>historical evidence.<span> </span>Timothy McVeigh, of the<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing" target="_blank"> Oklahoma City Bombing</a>, was a home-grown terrorist and right-wing extremist.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Now don’t get too flustered.<span> </span>The most recent serious threats to Washington have not come in the form of terrorist bombs but of <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/14/tea-bag-terror-protests-c_n_186596.html" target="_blank">tea bags</a>.<span> </span>That’s right &#8212; conservative protesters have been mailing tea bags as a sign of protest.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">These &#8220;Tea Baggers&#8221; are trying to invoke the memory of the Boston Tea Party when pre-Revolutionary colonials rejected British taxes by tossing British tea in to Boston Harbor. The modern day anti-tax citizens have been sending tea bags to Washington to protest new US taxes.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Security-minded officials have confiscated some of these tea bags (whose unknown content was deemed so threatening that some Congressional offices were evacuated).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">But for now, all the Department of Homeland Security has to worry about is unauthorized tea breaks.<span> </span>Let’s hope it stays that way.</p>
