We at USDemocrazy are familiar with the idiom “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But what if something is broke? And what if the “something” is Washington, D.C.?
Many Americans are at their wit’s end with the government, and as the video below shows, even members of government are stumped.
According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Sunday, 86% of Americans believe that the government is broken. Only 14% of those polled thought government was working properly.
There is hope though! Of the 86% that believe our government is broken, 81% say it can be salvaged… but 5% claim it is irreparably damaged.
So what do you think? Is government broken in the first place, and if so, how can it be fixed?

A year is a long time in politics. Twelve months ago President Obama was looking strong, but today things are different. (Read the blog post above for proof.) Still, many presidents have ups and downs during their four years in office. Do you think President Obama will recover to become more popular in the months and years ahead? (Cartoon by KAL)

We here at USDemocrazy love discourse, particularly when it involves us telling our editors what we think of their pathetic ideas. Thus, we have been very excited to follow the special election in Massachusetts.
Paul Kirk, the interim replacement for the late Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy, will not be seeking to serve out the remainder of Senator Kennedy’s term.
This has led to much interest in political circles. Kirk, a Democrat was one of the sixty votes in the Senate that helped health care reform squeak in.
For awesome sites this week, therefore, we want to share some interesting info on that important Massachusetts race. Most notably… the candidates and Health Care. …read more.

We here at USDemocrazy are taking time to reflect. We would much rather do that then listen to our editors!
This week features a look back at 2009, and today reflection will be political in nature.
Seeing that we are in the season of giving, how about the ten perfect gifts for the politicians in your life? …read more.
We at US Democrazy love freedom. Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom to sleep until noon… you know, all the important stuff.
We also love to hear folks give rousing speeches about freedom.
In this week’s Film Festival series, we have assembled some clips from famous American speeches. The speeches use rhetorical flourishes to address important American issues particularly freedom.

We at USDemocrazy are always impressed by strong leaders. For this reason, our editors are a constant source of disappointment.
So, with the news late last week of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, we decided to dedicate this week’s Awesome Sites collection from the World Wide Web to the websites of world leaders!
We’ve got all sorts… and they are quite varied and curious.
We here at USDemocrazy try hard to be reliable. For example, if free ice cream is available anywhere within 50 miles, you can rely on us being there.
You can also rely on our Awesome Sites editor to assemble a cool selection of reliable websites each week. …read more.

Watch out, D.C. Linda McMahon, CEO of WWE, is resigning in hopes of becoming Connecticut’s next senator.
And not surprisingly, the Senate has already held a wrestling match, when, in 1964, two senators (who were both 61 years old) tussled before heading into the Committee Room.
We at USDemocrazy have always believed in the adage “The more the merrier”. But apparently more is not merry when it involves Rush Limbaugh and Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele.
Democrats, and even some Republicans, have painted Limbaugh as leader of the Republican Party. They cite Limbaugh’s recent hardline views of the current White House (like when he remarked that he hopes Obama fails).
Steele, who was recently elected Chairman of the RNC, seems to feel HE is the head honcho as he claims in the above video.
Looks like this party might not be big enough for the two of them (most of the space being taken up by Rush).
But don’t worry — the Grand Old Party is not about to become divided just yet! Steele quickly apologized to Grand Master Limbaugh.
Now Republican moderates are in a rage! They fear that Steele was not so steely when he backed down to hardliners in the GOP. They are wondering if this will be a trend in the years ahead.
For answers (or maybe more questions) on “What to do about Rush” check out this NY Times blog.
One thing is for sure… If Michael Steele wants to take the limelight from Rush Limbaugh, he is going to have some BIG (literally and figuratively) shoes to fill.
1. Please tell us your full name and state and provide a sentence describing who you are for our readers:
Anna Shields, native Alabaman and director of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Honors College.
2. What makes your state distinct?
SHIELDS: Alabama is defined by: its hot humid summers, beautiful rivers and lakes, football, and a church every half-mile.
3. If your state were a person, describe its, his, or her personality:
SHIELDS: If Alabama were a person, he’d be a middle-aged “bidnessman,” gunrack optional on his white Ford-F150, which he drives to his cabin on the lake. He is suspicious of the rest of the world, never goes farther than Atlanta (which he hates when he does have to go there, as do all right-thinking people), and happy to root for his football team (Auburn or Alabama), vote Republican, do his work, and go to church.
4. What’s the funniest thing about your state
SHIELDS: Ricky Bragg, the writer. Funny and poignant at the same time.
