Who Knows the News?

Here’s a hint: The answer isn’t Fox News viewers.

Research conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University finds that those who watch the network are less informed than those who don’t watch news at all. It is one of several studies to find similar results.

Participants were asked to answer questions about their news habits, followed by inquires about current events. Those who identified as Fox viewers proved to know the least on the matters.

The results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all.”

Those who go to sources like NPR, USA Today, and the New York Times were generally more informed. Followers of “The Daily Show” were also found to have a better understanding of the issues.

Jon Stewart has not spent a lot of time on some of these issues. But the results show that when he does talk about something, his viewers pick up a lot more information than they would from other news sources.”

Facebook Cookie Monster?

If you are a Facebook user like most of us, when you “logout” of the site you believe that it no longer  has access.

Wrong!

Facebook now admits to having cookies that continually track a user’s activities after signing off. The user must log off  and close it’s browser completely in order for tracking to stop.

“Like every site on the Internet that personalises content and tries to provide a secure experience for users, we place cookies on the computer of the user…..”Three of these cookies on some users’ computers inadvertently included unique identifiers when the user had logged out of Facebook.”

Facebook says it has fixed a problem with cookies that could identify and track users when they visit other websites.

Any page with Facebook codes on them (such as Like buttons, Share buttons, or widgets) will still capture your activity and send it to Facebook, even after you log out.

Bye Bye Jersey Shore??

by thatswhatshesaid News

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has expressed his disdain for MTV’s popular show Jersey Shore in the past. Now he might act on his hostility…

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority gives the show $420,000 tax credit (also known as the Snooki subsidy) for filming down the Shore. Christie could veto the credit in an effort to save money for the state.

But the action could backfire as the state could lose millions in tourism revenue if the show relocates.(Jersey Shore shot in Ocean City?)

In season one alone, there were 495 productions earning New Jersey $2.1 million in revenue.  Christie has a week to decide.

The Tribe Strikes Back

by thatswhatshesaid News

Seneca Nation Sign posted on Thruway in New York State

If you are driving in Upstate New York, BEWARE…you could be soon in the epicenter of an “international” incident.

The hunk of highway in question rests in the Cattaraugus reservation of the Seneca Nation.

Recently, a dispute as old as America’s history has boiled up between the governing bodies of New York and Native American tribe over money.

For the last four years, an agreement has allowed the Seneca Nation to collect $1 for every vehicle that has crossed the reservation on the Thruway (see sign above).

Now the state wants to get some money back. The tax collectors of New York are eyeballing profits from the Nation’s casinos and cigarette sales.

A court decision earlier this year awarded the State limited rights of collection. Now irate tribal tobacco shop owners are responding by filling their shelves with only Indian branded goods (because they are not subject to state taxes).

The Seneca’s new president, Robert Odawi Porter, said in an interview.

It could be cigarettes today; it was beaver pelts 300 years ago. What we have to defend is the principle: that the State of New York has no authority to reach into our nation.”

The Seneca’s have proven they can be formidable adversaries.

Last week the nation won a two decade battle to gain limited rights to the Kinzua hydropower dam. Their claim stemmed from the ancestral homelands that were flooded against the tribe’s wishes to create the reservoir in the 1960’s.

Under the leadership of Harvard-educated Porter, it appears the Seneca Nation will be an assertive and newsworthy nation within the nation.
