We at USDemocrazy would like to think that we’d have good style… if we weren’t so busy surfing the ‘net in our pajamas.
When the ladies of our team (and the dudes, too, perhaps) need some fashion help, we need look no further than America’s very own first lady, Michelle Obama.
Mrs. Obama is attention-worthy for many reasons. Like many first ladies, she is active in many public causes. She recently launched the Let’s Move! campaign to make the nation’s kids a healthier bunch.
But being in the public eye 24/7 means all eyes are on her garb. Like it or not, a first lady can be judged by her clothes. …read more.

On a lighter note, the First Lady Michelle Obama informed us of President Obama’s most annoying habit.

Fashion is a fickle friend, as we at USDemocrazy know. (We’re still sporting the fanny pack, because you KNOW it’ll be back in style any day now. Right?)
So, how is a first lady to keep up appearances of being in-touch with the trends while maintaining a professional and serious reputation? Just ask Michelle Obama, since she seems to have that down pat.
Fashion seems to be something that first ladies will either embrace completely (Jackie O.) or maybe not worry so much about (Barbara Bush). Now, who’s to say which way is better? For instance, what do we remember most about Hillary Clinton’s tenure as first lady? Failed health care reform, not her wide array of pantsuits, necessarily.
Maybe it’s too soon to wonder about Michelle Obama’s legacy in the White House, but one thing has already become apparent: the woman can dress (and can even dress her family!).
Yet, for all her fashionable glory, Mrs. Obama not only has to walk the line of influential/deferential but also that of fashion-forward/recession-chic. This article points out a $6,000 clutch she was seen, well, clutching, on a walk in Russia.
One consequently must grapple with admiration for Michelle for representing labels such as J. Crew and Gap (the labels of the preppy everyman/woman) and frustration that she is actually super rich (something many people forget about when it comes to presidential families). (Note: it turns out the clutch was misidentified, and is actually only $875! What a deal!)
Perhaps you’ll recall the 2008 election where all the women involved in the campaign were nearly as closely scrutinized as their partners (we’re talking about you, Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama, and Sarah Palin). And remember all of the grief Governor Palin got for her expensive new duds she got for the campaign, which she wore whilst trying to appeal to America’s falling-poor populous? (You know, when the recession fell smack on top of us all.)
Well, it just went to show that clothes are not merely clothes, but their own little sartorial spheres of influence.
Americans expect a lot from their first lady, perhaps rightly so. Yes, the president is the face of the nation, but whom does the president take on his travels abroad? That’s right… his lady. Thus, it’s only fitting that things like Mrs. Obama’s hair and arms are major topics of discussion. (Note that we’re talking about hair and arms separately, not arm hair.)
So, while Michelle Obama finds her footing on issues of her choice, she can rest easily knowing she’s setting trends and influencing a nation of fashion-conscious women.
Do you feel like you know fashion? Then critique Michelle Obama’s best and worst looks, then take a quiz on trends in the White House. THEN tell us what you expect from a first lady… A mind on clothes, or a mind on the issues?

It might be April now, but March Madness still has its grips on the staff here at USDemocrazy! You’ve heard of the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, the Final Four, but what about the Group of Twenty?
OK, so we misled you. We’re not talking basketball anymore… we’re talking world economic crisis!
You might have heard about this big conference that’s going on in London right now, a meeting of the Group of Twenty (or G20, for short). The G20 is comprised of the leaders of the 20 most important countries in terms of economics and money and stuff, including the U.S., the European Union, the U.K., France, Russia, China, and all their cronies. They’re over there this week to talk about the world’s financial funk .
Reuters put together a fact sheet on the G20’s meeting and its purpose. Apparently this is kind of a big deal, and we know that because pretty much everyone seems to be talking about it!
And we all know, where there’s world leaders, there’s protesters. Though police in London have been preparing for protesters for a while now, things still boil over sometimes. In the City of London (the financial district), there’s been yelling, riot gear, and window smashing!
Now, this ain’t no vacation in London for these guys, let’s get that straight. There’s a lot of plans for global economic salvation being tossed around, and not lightly. It’s more like these plans are being thrown into each other’s faces. Not nice…
So, President Obama appeared with England’s Prime Minister Brown to try and present a unified front, and to quell the fears of failure. Then, Mr. President sat down to talk arms agreements with Russia (as in weapons, not Michelle Obama’s).
If all that weren’t enough, Obama found some time to schmooze with the Queen of England (the real one, not Helen Mirren). Trying to get on her good side, Obama and the First Lady gave Her Highness an iPod. We’d pay money to see the Queen strolling around with ear buds in!
We’re all wondering how the G20 meeting will turn out in the end, as we’re all interested in not seeing the world plunge into a depression. And so we’re wondering if you think that a group of such important world leaders can agree on a cohesive and effective plan. Well, do ya?
