This past week, the U.S. government observed an anniversary that some would rather forget. On Wednesday, Guantanamo Bay is turning the big 1-0!
The controversial detention camp opened 10 years ago to hold captives of the Bush administration’s War on Terror. And it’s been the center of debates on human rights and military imprisonment ever since.
The use of torture is the main reason for the appalling and shocking fact that 10 years after 9/11 the alleged perpetrators of those attacks have not been brought to justice, despite the fact they’ve been held for many years.”
Recently the dispute has focused on President Obama’s failed promise to close Guantanamo over two years ago. A goal his administration is still touting.
The commitment that the president has to closing Guantanamo Bay is as firm today as it was during the campaign … I think this is a process that faces obstacles that we’re all aware of and we will continue to work through them.”
Maybe they are waiting for the right moment to win back all the dissatisfied liberals before the election…

If you haven’t had time to keep up with election politics this season, here’s a handy field guide to the current Republican flock that may be of help.

This time of the year there are many articles and TV shows looking BACK at the events of the past year. The cartoon above dares to look ahead at the events of the next decade. Which of these do you think are most likely to happen? (Cartoon by KAL)

One of the many new features being launched at USDemocrzy is “Cartoon of the day.” From time to time we will showcase some really cool cartoons we find on the web that provide interesting insights on the issues of the day.
We particularly want to trumpet the artwork of our blog editor KAL from The Economist. This is not because we think the cartoons are any good, but because the price was within our budget (i.e. free).
Please let us know of your favorite cartoons and cartoonists on the web!
I have just returned from two weeks at the Democratic and Republican conventions where I was contributing a daily cartoon sketchbook to The Economist magazine. The conventions are grand affairs full of pomp, ceremony, high security, and political theatrics.
This year seemed to be particularly interesting because the presidential race is so close and each convention had a unique storyline. The democrats needed to resolve political infighting between the The Hillary Clinton supporters and the Obamaniacs. The Republicans needed to regain momentum after loosing the first day of their event (to Hurricane Gustuv) and then introduce a controversial Vice Presidential candidate to the world.
In both cases the respective parties acheived their goals. The Democrats ended with an impressive speech by Barack Obama in front of 70,000 (see photo above) while Sarah Palin galvanized the Republican base with her convention speech.
Below I have enclosed some samples of my sketches from the two conventions.
