A Monster of a problem!

by Ambiturner Cartoon of the Day, News

Kal Econ Cartoon 11-25-10web

If you are depressed about things in the USA these days… don’t try to escape the madness by taking a vacation in Europe… you’ll only get MORE DEPRESSED.

Recently, countries like Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Britain have been grappling with gigantic economic disasters of their own.

Governments are in deep debt… almost bankruptcy. Politicians in those countries are desperately trying to tackle the problem with mixed success (See cartoon above).

Meanwhile, peeved citizens have been revolting against government painful economic remedies, as seen in Ireland this past weekend.

Iceland is in such desperate straits that it is re-drafting its constitution.

Yesterday, the entire country voted to elect 31 individuals, who will make up an assembly to put together a new charter for the island nation. This dramatic action is at least partially influenced by Iceland’s financial crisis in 2008.

Makes you wonder if  the United States should consider this, too?   If you could change something about the US constitution, what would you change?

Whatz’up in the World?

by Photo Guru News

Africa

The African Union summit in Uganda ended recently without making a decision regarding their troops in Somalia. Uganda, which was bombed due to its troops being part of the African Union mission in Somalia, advocated for strengthening the mandate from peacekeeping to peace enforcing, but others want to wait for more funding before making the change.

Asia

Survivors of the genocide in Cambodia have mixed feelings about the first conviction of Kaing Guek Eav (also known as Duch), a major Khmer Rouge figure. Duch was found guilty of crimes against humanity and received a 35 year prison sentence that was later reduced to 19 years. Many say that Duch, whose actions condoned the torture and murder of 14,000 people, should receive a life sentence, while others are glad that those involved in the genocide are finally being punished.

Europe

A six year old in Ireland has a huge allowance. 7,500 Euros to be exact, which comes out to $9,748.27. He came into the money after suing a grocery store for defamation of character, false imprisonment and assault after a store employee falsely accused the boy of stealing a bag of chips.

Latin America

Haiti’s next president might be someone you already know! Wyclef Jean of The Fugees is considering running for president in his home country. Wyclef has been very involved in Haiti, especially after the devastating earthquake, starting the Yele Haiti Foundation.

What’zup Today?

by Photo Guru News

No, that wasn’t Senator McCain having a “senior moment.” It was his reaction to General Petraeus fainting during a Congressional hearing.

A tribunal declares that Bloody Sunday, when 14 Irishmen were killed by British soldiers, was unjustifiable and Britain apologizes for its actions. Now, everyone who has Sunday, Bloody Sunday by U2 stuck in their head, raise your hands.

Which side are you on?

Thanks to the Guardian, we see some Silvio Berlusconi statuettes with some blood for flare in light of recent events...

Thanks to the Guardian, we see some Silvio Berlusconi statuettes with some blood for flare in light of recent events...

This is one of a series of dispatches from our Foreign correspondent currently based in Scotland:

Ahhh… December 17. Almost time for me to resign my post as USDemocrazy Foreign Correspondent in Scotland and return to the ol’ homestead.

Can’t wait to get back to the place I know well, complete with crazy politics, late nights, and unique smells. And that’s just in the USDemocrazy headquarters.

But before coming home, I decided to pop over to Italy to check on things there.

(Editor’s note: The timing with the Recent attack on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (Ouch)is purely coincidental)

What was the biggest culture shock going from the UK to Italy? The politics? The people? The food? The language?

Nope — the traffic. …read more.
