Let the Fireworks Begin!

by YourOtherLeft News

Light the fireworks!

As of Wednesday, the brand-spanking new Congress is back in action.  This time with more Republicans!

These new conservatives are promising lots of fireworks in Washington in the months ahead.

Number one target in their sights: the health care reform passed in early 2010.   These new Republicans are determined to get rid of “Obamacare”… a campaign promise which catapulted many of them to victory.

Some congressional newcomers have gone as far as turning down their own government-funded health insurance.

Though the GOP claims to have a mandate from the American people to reverse President Obama’s health care plan, the Republicans are in a tight spot.

They only control the House of Representatives… leaving the Democrats in control of the Senate (and let’s not forget the White House).

Yet, against all odds Republican leadership is fighting on…or just wasting time?  What do you think?

Kal econ cartoon 3-25-2010 web

As if President Obama did not have enough troubles on his plate… US ally Israel is causing continued heartburn for the President. We are told there will be no peace in the world until there is peace in the Middle East… and the prospect for long term peace seems to be in pieces at the moment. What would you tell the President to do?

Good Medicine?

by MZ Hammmer News

Thanks to Wikicommons.

With all of the talk of health care reform flying about (seriously, check any news-related website) one issue is often glossed over: what changes will the health care reform bill actually generate?

Well, we at USDemocrazy have taken the noble task of rounding up wisdom from across the ‘net in order to enlighten you on the what the Democrats’ magnum opus will actually do when it is signed into law (most likely sometime today).

Health Care Gets a Second Wind…

by kaltoons News

Courtesy of WikiCommons

We at USDemocrazy are kind of confused about most things… (Editor: what else is new?) But one thing we are not confused about is the utterly confusing nature of US health care. We are bewilderedly confused.

But for the simple folks out there like us, THERE IS HOPE!

After over a year of  health policy struggles, things in Washington are beginning to move… unfortunately we are not sure in what direction.

Last week, President Obama laid out his own detailed vision for health care. Check out the actual plan, right here, as linked by the WaPo.

And… on this coming Thursday, the president and the Republicans are going to have a big pow-wow to lock horns on health care.

Because we are so confusingly confused, we have surfed the web to try to figure out what’s all this means… here’s what we’ve learned…

Did somebody say party? Image Courtesy of WikiCommons.

We at USDemocrazy love a good party.

But if someone was to invite us over for a rousing discussion of health care policy…hmmmm

We would probably be “busy” that night walking the dog. (Unless there was food. Never turn down food.)

But, alas, suppose the guy asking was the President of the United States!

You see, the Republicans in Congress just got such an invite via a TV interview before the big game Sunday (props to the Saints.) Come on over and discuss policy, President Obama says… and there will be food! Would you go?

Mean Joe?

by kaltoons News

The Pittsburgh Steelers once had an intimidating defender named “Mean Joe” Greene who struck fear into the heart of every NFL quarterback.

Today, if President Obama had the choice of starin’ down “Mean Joe” Greene or  Senator Joe Lieberman …he might just pick the former.

These past two days the Senator from Connecticut has been playing hard ball in Washington over HEALTH CARE.

Senator Joe isn’t a fan of parts of the Democrats’ health care plan that is nearing a vote in Congress.

This is getting Democrats pretty cranky. That is because Joe Lieberman’s vote may be THE deciding vote in the Health Care debate. As a result if Joe says No…it ain’t going to go….

So Joe is taking out his surgeon’s scalpel and demanding some amputation to the Democrats’ bill. …read more.

We at USDemocrazy don’t know much. But we do know when to shut up and listen to someone who knows what he/she’s talking about.

That is why we decided to interview the brilliant Dr Tom Schaller about some important trends in politics today.

In the first video above, we asked him tell us about the rare sighting of a moderate in Washington DC.

In the second, below he tells us about the challenges facing the Republicans in the 2012 Presidential elections (Yes, they will be here in NO TIME!).

Stayed tuned for more brilliant takes from Dr Schaller in the days ahead… including his insight to The Colbert Show!

Filled Full of Filibusters?

by kaltoons News

Courtesy of the New York Times and the AP

In the course of our goofing around, wasting time, eating cake diligent research, we here at USDemocrazy constantly run into the word FILIBUSTER.

At first we thought it was a candy bar, we have since discovered that the filibuster is bitter-sweet. It can be both good and ,well a little annoying.

Basically the filibuster is a tactic used in the Senate to delay or prevent a vote on a particular bill.

Time for a bit of a history lesson… …read more.

What’z Up Today?

by LittleBones Whatzup

Not in my Back Prison Yard! :With all the talk of Gitmo closing soon, an Illinois prison may be in line to take “a limited number” of terror suspects. Some local politicians are suspect of these suspects.

Collateral damage: Although we tend to see war in terms of deaths, economic costs, and physical destruction, a new study on birth defects in Iraq may have discovered new unintended outgrowths of modern warfare.

Tweet to Space: Tomorrow’s Space shuttle launch will have a new interactive twist. For the first 100 to sign up, NASA will use Twitter to give people a first-hand look at the launch.

Ooops… The New York Times has uncovered compromising emails sent by lobbyists for Big Pharma company Genentech to members of Congress. What’s the big deal? Some legislators have taken these emails’ talking points and inserted them word-for-word into speeches and statements.

We here at USDemocrazy are trying are hard (a novelty for us) to follow the recent health care hullabaloo that took place in Washington on Saturday night (check it out here).

In the midst of sleeping, eating, diligent research, we learned the health care bill the House passed on Saturday is upsetting a few people.

For a start, pro-choice advocates are none too pleased with the bill as it doesn’t allow coverage for the controversial practice of  abortions.

We here at USDemocrazy are just trying to keep are heads down, as fingers are being pointed and kitchen sinks are zinging through the air. We don’t have any answers to the health care bill/ abortion debate, but one of these people may do…
