From our reporters on the ground (take 2): Why sanity? Why rally? Why now?
by ForeverPlaid
News, Stewart/Colbert DC Rally
We at USDemocrazy were really excited to have been a part of Saturday’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.
On the metro to the rally and for a few hours before the action started, we were at work taking pics of the best rally signs (see the beginnings of our documentation here) and interviewing fellow rally-goers about their thoughts for the day.
You’ll be experiencing our observations in the coming posts, but we thought Jon Stewart’s “moment of sincerity” that closed out the event is worth a look for now…
First, here’s the video (in case you missed it!):
The sanity ring-leader joked at the beginning about no one (including us) having a clue as to what the rally really meant to achieve.
We heard answers to this question that were pretty wide in range: from Stewart needing to host a rally to counter Glenn Beck’s own event a few months back, to poking fun at the out-of-control 24-hour-media-punditry-blogosphere-etc.-complex, to pushing for items of the liberal agenda (there were more than a few supporters of legalizing pot who showed their enthusiasm by partaking), and so on.
It was like America in miniature: presumably we were all there for the same reason, but all of us were fueled by our own specific interests and ideas.
Mr. Stewart focused his attack on two areas: the extremists on both ends of the spectrum… and the media with their incendiary points of view. He aptly called out the media for their noise and hype:
If we amplify everything, we hear nothing! …read more.

From our reporters on the ground (take 1): FEAR Sanity
by ChickPea
News, Stewart/Colbert DC Rally

Thanks to the Globe and Mail
From where I stood it appeared as if there were 1 million people at the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally in D.C. today.
A big emphasis here has clearly been on Jon Stewart’s “Restore Sanity” part of the gig, but these liberal elitists have largely ignored Stephen Colbert’s much maligned “March To Keep Fear Alive!”
To rectify this, we set out to find those loyal Colbert supporters who have been so unfairly disenfranchised.
“I believe Jon Stewart is treasonable not reasonable,” said one woman, who agreed to talk to us only on the conditions of anonymity, fearing retaliation from a(n) (in)sane Stewart crowd.
“We can’t have sanity… that will just make us less safe! Lock up all the terrorists and deport the illegals… even I should be deported” she said, voicing true resolve for her cause.
Others were open to sharing the fears they want kept alive:
- Squirrels
- Not getting a job
- Fear itself
- Holding signs
- Democracy
- Republican take-over of Congress
- Finally, blood sugar dropping during the rally
“We’re just here because Stephen told us to come, we were scared what would happen if we didn’t” said one concerned couple from New York.
More disturbing than their message of sanity and reasonableness, was the crowd’s general politeness, how can a rally gain force if its participants are not forceful? The Stewart apostles claimed to be from “Real America” but we all know real Americans attend Republican rallies.
After all to quote one one loyal fear monger “where would we be if we didn’t have fear to motivate us?” Only whiners want sanity.

News, Stewart/Colbert DC Rally
We will be filing live updates here and tweeting from the Mall in Washington DC. Report back here through out the afternoon for on-the-ground takes on the lunacy from our crack team.
2:50 John Stewart gives a powerful bid for sanity in a serious 12 minute lecture that will no doubt be repeated, analyzed, scrutinized and dismembered by his enemies. Sounded good to us.
It was a powerful and daring appeal for reasonable-ness. The best metaphor was when he showed a live video clip of traffic trying to squeese into the New York Lincoln tunnel. The notion was hundreds of drivers of all colors and denominations find a way to cooperate and get in and tru the tunnel. He warned there may be a light at the end of the tunnel… or it could just be New Jersey.
2:40 Colbert video montages of fearmongering clips from Fox, CNBC, CNN puts Stewart on the defensive… then John Oliver arrives on stage dressed as Peter Pan in an effort to save Stewart’s hide.
2:30 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar makes a guest appearance as a muslim to prove to Colbert that there are “good” muslims.
2:20 Stewart and Colbert are embraced in dueling Keynote addresses… it is a mock debate pitting reasoning against fear
2:10 Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow now are now performing on stage. I would imagine Lotsa musicians would’ve paid big bucks to be on stage for this gig. Evidently Comedy Central had a 1000 requests for press passes from news and tv crews from around the world.
2:oo Stewart/Colbert duet ” the Greatest, Strongest Country in the World” was lacking in musicality but made up on enthusiasm and jokes.
1:50 Musicians Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy (from Chicago) sing the sober “You are not alone”. So far an interesting mix of music and comedy seems to be working.
1:40 4 Medals of Reasonable-ness being issued by Jon Stewart. Colbert giving Fear Medals
1:30 The crowd is rocking to the 70’s classic “Love Train” by the O’Jays who have taken the stage
1:20 Actor Sam Watterson reads a Fear benediction poem “written” by Stephen Colbert. Now Yusef (formerly known as Cat Stevens) performs his famous song “Peace Train” as a rebuttal.Only to be interrupted by Colbert with Ozzie Osbourne… this is getting good.
1:12 Father Guido Sarducci is a fictional character made famous by American comedian Don Novello gives a hilarious benediction to the crowd. He asks God to please signify the one true religion.
1:08 Colbert makes his appearance via video from his fear bunker 2000 ft below the stage
1:05 Stewart declares 10 million people are in attendance
1:01 Jon Stewart hits the stage with view of the Capital building behind him. Beautiful weather. The National anthem being sung by Four US troops
12:55 They have giant prompters on the stage to instruct audience to cheer, laugh, laugh like a mad scientist etc. The audience is responding enthusiastically to this clear effort at mind control. Does Glen Beck use these same devious tactics?
12:47 First estimate of crowd size from the stage is over 150,000
12:07 After much anticipation the schedule for today’s event has been announced:
