Last week we talked here about the big compromise in Washington DC between the Republicans in Congress and President Barack Obama over taxes. The reaction to the deal has been loud… with many folks shouting DEBT!!!

It appears this new deal will add $200 billion to the country’s debt over the next two years. The cartoon above gives its own spin to the story… What’s yours?  (cartoon by KAL)

We at USDemocrazy have been watching the fallout of the Wikileaks scandal quite closely. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange wants to make government and business organizations more transparent, or open to scrutiny from the public. The cartoon above questions whether that is possible. What do you think?  (cartoon by KAL)

A Monster of a problem!

by Ambiturner Cartoon of the Day, News

Kal Econ Cartoon 11-25-10web

If you are depressed about things in the USA these days… don’t try to escape the madness by taking a vacation in Europe… you’ll only get MORE DEPRESSED.

Recently, countries like Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Britain have been grappling with gigantic economic disasters of their own.

Governments are in deep debt… almost bankruptcy. Politicians in those countries are desperately trying to tackle the problem with mixed success (See cartoon above).

Meanwhile, peeved citizens have been revolting against government painful economic remedies, as seen in Ireland this past weekend.

Iceland is in such desperate straits that it is re-drafting its constitution.

Yesterday, the entire country voted to elect 31 individuals, who will make up an assembly to put together a new charter for the island nation. This dramatic action is at least partially influenced by Iceland’s financial crisis in 2008.

Makes you wonder if  the United States should consider this, too?   If you could change something about the US constitution, what would you change?

Many countries in Europe and North America got hit pretty hard by the world financial meltdown of 2008. To get out of the mess, governments are cutting programs, slashing budgets, laying off staff.

Pretty miserable stuff.

The cartoon above tries to tell the story in pictures. What do you think will be the next pictures in the story will look like? (Cartoon by KAL)

If you are unfamiliar with the Middle East there are two things you need to know about the region:

  • There will be no peace in the world until there is peace in the Middle East
  • Peace in the Middle East is a long way away.

The cartoon above addresses a current thorny issue in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict… the increase building of new Israeli settlements in land that Palestinians also hold a claim. The cartoon above is a pessimistic about the subject but this article is a little more hopeful.

Note in the cartoon: The “Bibi” mentioned in the piece refers to Benjamin”Bibi” Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel. (Cartoon by KAL)

By now everyone knows the Republicans have won a bigger share of power in Washington. What everybody doesn’t exactly know is what they are going to do with it. The cartoon above suggests a rocky ride ahead.

Where do you sit in this conversation? (cartoon by KAL)

It is widely regarded that every politician running for re-election must remember one thing: “It’s The Economy, stupid!”.

For voters, the economy (and how they are fairing in it) is usually the number one item on their priority list. For President Obama and the Democrats, the stubbornly slow US economy will likely be an important deciding factor for voters in the upcoming midterm elections.

The cartoon above paints us a picture of the dilemma facing the President. Obama inherited a devastated economy from George Bush but the voters will likely hold him responsible for its sorry state … is this fair? (cartoon by KAL)

201020WWD000The USA is desperately trying to stabilize the feisty and difficult country of Afghanistan. It’s been 10 years and progress is, well… elusive. It doesn’t help that the current President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai is a little feisty and difficult himself. New suggestions of corruption in his government are complicating things… as the cartoon above suggests!  (Cartoon by KAL)

Dangerous Money!!

by Photo Guru Cartoon of the Day, News

mine mine!

A while ago, President Obama revealed his new plan for Afghanistan. For those of you who don’t remember (Okay, I’ll admit it. We need a refresher too!), the plan included aid that would help Afghanistan’s development.

Some of the aid money goes directly to local tribal elders, who then disperse it in the community.

Back in the 1990s, when similar outlays of cash were made available to the tribal elders, the Taliban would go to the elders and demand the money. Today, the newly resurgent Taliban is trying the same trick.

However, now, some tribal leaders are standing up to the Taliban.

Their actions come with consequences. Recently, elders who have refused to give money to the Taliban have been shot.

This is a shocking reminder of the dangers that threaten progress in Afghanistan.

Still, the resolute opposition by some tribal elders to the Taliban’s demands is an interesting new development.

It could indicate that Obama’s strategy for civilian aid might be working. What do you think? Is Obama’s plan wise?

Some days you get out of bed … and want to roll back into bed and pull the covers over your head. In the cartoon above, the poor sea bed doesn’t look so enticing.  Yes, things are not looking so good in the Gulf of Mexico these days. Even so, things could be worse. You could be a fish.
