We here at USDemocrazy have been following the Battle Royale between Fox News and the White House, just like everybody else (check out our last bit on the smackdown here).
Jack Shafer over at Slate gives us a bit of his historical (not hysterical) perspective on the matter. Shafer says if we really want to see a battle for the ages, check out FDR vs. the Media.President Obama has been compared a bunch of times to FDR (even by stories covered by us here).
But according to Shafer:
To get a genuine picture of what a war on the press looks like,… You’ve got to go back to the 1930s, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt raged against the press like noisy clockwork.
This seems like a neat perspective on a matter… The question remains whether the heated battle between the press and the President (of any era) is a good thing.
What’s your thoughts? Should they be friends or foes?
