We at US Democrazy love a full plate (especially on Thanksgiving) but President Obama seems to have taken (or rather been given) more than his share of problems.
To help you keep track, we have a maddening menu of Obama’s plate full of problems.
Soup: Afghan Plan du Jour
Okay, so we are starting with leftovers (from President George Bush), however, Obama has added his own seasonings.
What’s the big picture now? Well, General Stanley McChrystal, head honcho of US forces in Afghanistan, says we need more boots on the ground.
Obama has not officially decided but he’s definitely pondering the question as he noted on ‘Meet the Press,’
The question that I’m asking right now is to our military, to General McChrystal, to General Petraeus, to all our national security apparatus, is— whether it’s troops who are already there, or any troop request in the future, how does this advance America’s national security interests
Salad: Mixed Green (Initiatives)
Climate change has been a hot issue for a while now but Obama & congress have served up some legislation.
Soon, however Obama will be tackling international environmental initiatives. World leaders are meeting for a daylong discussion on climate change. Of course the big climate meeting is December’s meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.
With a salad this mixed there is sure to be some disagreement. Already, Obama is going to have to navigate EU annoyance with the lack of American action.
Hors d’oeuvre: Financial Finger Foods
In case you were out the US economy has been in a rough patch lately. How’d this happen?
Well, basically many banks crashed and started a disastrous game of dominoes (for a better description check out our earlier coverage)
The official story now is that the economy will be all up from here. Of course, that doesn’t mean it has to be a fast recovery.
The Feds are also going to have to figure out what to do with the toxic mortgages they bought. It’s enough to give you indigestion.
Main Course: Health Care Surprise
Health care has been the main event on capital hill for quite some time now. Initially, Obama stayed out of the kitchen but recently he’s joined the chefs.
Congress is now reaching the point of debating the recipe to solve America’s health care needs.
Obama however is having trouble finding consensus, even from Democrats. Some Republicans however are showing they may be able to find at least some common ground.
Where will this lead? Nobody knows for sure but Democracy in America, of The Economist, makes an interesting point that
there are plenty of small steps being considered that warrant our attention and support, regardless of political affiliation. Let’s not forget this should major reform fail. They’ll still be good ideas thereafter.
Dessert: Raging Right Raspberries
Don’t forget dessert. Not that you could with all of the shouting. Just about every choice Obama makes seems to anger the right.
Of course, there will also be plenty of hot tea to wash the meal down.
Sounds good doesn’t? Of course everyone has different tastes so if there is something you think should be on the menu feel free to comment. Otherwise you’ll be eating what were cooking.
