For example the "pirate" party's platform is shared by a more mainstream and relevant party. With representative govt and more than two parties, it's a lot easier to throw away a vote without actually throwing it away. What this post nor the sources mention is that some of these far-right conservative parties are one step short of fascists. Knowing that is probably more important than a humorous fringe party (which btw, isn't even the most humorous party to win; a man declaring himself his own party in britain won a seat).
