Today we ponder the curious question of what qualities make a good judge?
Yeah, yeah we know… they have to know all that dry law stuff. But does a good judge need to possess a little more? How about some… humanity?
That’s what the Obama folks are saying, that judges need “a wide variety of past experience … having the ability to empathize and walk in someone’s shoes.”
Ladies and gentlemen, this is interesting! Empathy is, in general a good thing (you empathize with us there, don’t you?). However, making empathy new priority of the courtroom is a twist that could change the tone of a judicial circuit.
How does all this come up you ask? The Obama administration has made its first court nomination! David Hamilton has been nominate for a seat on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Check out the press release here.
